Spring 2010 is approaching and there’s a lot of buzz around topics like the economy, taxation, global poverty, restoration in Haiti/Chile, and lastly, green awareness.

With spring, Earth Day also draws nearer (April 22nd); as individuals, we must remember and realize the importance of global warming and all of its implications. Subsequent topics discussed as of late include space travel/burning of fossil fuels, deforestation and green building.

As nations like Haiti and Chile prepare for rebuilding and new construction, there are many things to consider when advancing. Moving towards cleaner, greener infrastructure is vital in ensuring a successful restoration campaign.

The U.S. Green Building Council is a 501(3)(c) non-profit community of leaders working to make green buildings available to everybody. It’s one of the many organizations playing its role in green progression.

Heavy discussion lies on green topics, especially the more recent ones like space travel; others include deforestation, green crops, clothing, energy, and much more. It’s important that we as individuals/citizens stay up-to-date on important global topics like warming.

As organizations like the CGI (Clinton Global Initiative), AFH (Architecture for Humanity), and the USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council) conducts sustainability campaigns and enforce strict green constraints, our world will continue to become a better, cleaner place. Machines behind the CGI, Doug Band and Former President Clinton have been pursuing an emission reduction plan in the San Francisco Bay area.

Meanwhile, GEC (Globetrotters Engineering Corporation) is underway with green building projects in Chicago, IL. Despite these few national examples, green infrastructure, particularly in places like Haiti, has become an integral part of restoration and construction.

This aligns with the implications of “economic viability” and long term sustainability, posing the questions, “Can Haiti really make it through all the costs of repair and reconstruction?”

Infrastructure can take a toll on any economy, especially if the funds aren’t there. This goes hand in hand with meeting modern day LEED standards and approaching this in a “greener” sense.

Organizations like Architecture for Humanity will make this possible. Architecture for Humanity (1999) is a nonprofit design services firm building “a more sustainable future through the power of professional design.”

It was formulated through a group of building professionals whose overwhelming passion for construction drove them to provide a way for underdeveloped, suffering countries to rebuild. Through their dedication and hard work, these people will be able to not only create new buildings and infrastructure, but make them bigger, better, and greener.

To touch on just some of the things that AFH covers:

• Alleviating poverty and providing access to water, sanitation, power and essential services

• Bringing safe shelter to communities prone to disaster and displaced populations

• Rebuilding community and creating neutral spaces for dialogue in post-conflict areas

• Mitigating the effects of rapid urbanization in unplanned settlements

• Creating spaces to meet the needs of those with disabilities and other at-risk populations

• Reducing the footprint of the built environment and addressing climate change

As polluters continue to buy their way out of Carbon Cuts globally, and large organizations continue to dump their waste into lakes, ponds and rivers, communities and must play their role in ensuring sustainability. Organizations like the CGI, AFH, and USGBC provide repercussion and policy change for acts such as.

Most of the results from warming and climate change are miniscule and unnoticeable now, but our youth and earlier generations will experience firsthand the effects of pollutants and unsustainable efforts.

Some people said it was a scam, while other’s thought it was a great product that could get rid of your power bills. So when it came to forking out real dollars for the product, I decided to investigate closely.

What is MagniWork?

Magniwork is a revolutionary system that utilizes green technology to power up every home. No special specifications for your wiring system or a requirement that you have to switch all your electricity receptors at home just to use Magniwork. Their system teaches just about anyone to harness the power of magnetic energy to generate green power that could completely replace your coal- or clean energy-powered electricity. Magniwork prepares and provides you the right tool in shifting towards magnetic-powered electricity.

How does it work?

The Magniwork Magnetic Electricity Generator works based on a simple concept. The system uses magnetic energy, one of the most abundant, simple, and powerful energy sources on earth, and converts that energy into standard electricity. Much like a solar panel would turn light into electricity, the Magniwork Generator turns magnetic energy into electricity.

Because the process is so simple, the generator is very basic, and requires virtually no maintainance and is prone to virtually no downtime. Unlike solar or wind power solutions, the Magniwork system does not rely on weather to provide power, meaning virtually no interruption in service – ever!

CLICK HERE TO VISIT THE OFFICIAL MAGNIWORK WEBSITE

Thanks to the simplicity of the concept behind the Magniwork system, the generator is very inexpensive and simple to build. When I tested the system before writing this article, my wife and I each constructed a “half house generator”.

Each generator was capable of providing 100% of the power for more than half of our home. We both had no problems following the construction process and each of the generators cost less than $100 to build, including all the needed supplies. The Magniwork Company provides quick and reliable support, 24/7 should you hit any snags or feel the need to verify information contained in the thorough guide.

What we really liked best about Magniwork was how detailed and simple the guide was to follow. In addition, the 60-Day Guarantee and easily accessible customer support made the product virtually flawless. The Discounted Price makes the value of the Magniwork System a no-brainer, being that the system will easily pay for itself in less than 2 months! Install your Magniwork Magnetic Generator today!

I’m Not a DIY-guy: Can I Use Magniwork?
To be honest, I’ve been really hesitant to purchase Magniwork simply because I’m not just a DIY person. Heck, I value my time more than just getting ecstatically high with fixing my shower pipe. Let’s be realistic here. I’d rather surf the net and look for some opportunities online than just fix broken things in my home. I’d get paid online but not on fixing a line.

What more if I need to power-up my home with some generator that I would have to build myself. Plus, I’m not good in following instructions. But their claim to completely eliminate my utility bill is just so irresistible. I mean, if I could just get electricity for free, heck, I would spend a couple of bucks just so I could learn how to do it.

CLICK HERE TO VISIT THE OFFICIAL MAGNIWORK WEBSITE

What You Should Need To Know About Magniwork
The Magniwork Generator enables you to gradually or completely use magnetic energy to power up your home. The cost of construction for this generator is around $100, which includes the supplies needed to keep it up and running. Unlike home or commercial generator, Magniwork has virtually no downtime and does not really to solar or wind so you could use it 24/7.

What makes Magniwork different?
The magnetic energy system is very different from either solar power or wind turbine. The technology uses the “attraction and repelling” forces of magnets, which is one of the most abundant, simple and powerful energy source to generate electricity.

Building Your Own Magniwork Generator
The e-book is basically an instructional manual showing you how to make your own magnet driven electric generator. Similar to solar technology, the concept is to use a “free energy” of magnetism to turn a generator motor.

The e-book claims that the generator is so simple, it basically requires virtually no maintenance and it will have no down time. Somehow I doubt that is ever the case. Anything with moving parts will experience wear and tear and need replacement sooner or later.

By following the instructions, the Magniwork manual proclaim you can build the magnetic generator for a budget of less than $200.
Honestly, looking at all the magnet bars (12 pieces), bearings, aluminum plate, copper wires, copper tubes etc, you need more than that to get the generator built.

If you were to follow all the instruction, you have to spend a lot of time sourcing for used magnets from industrial complexes. This will take a very long time and effort. It would have been a much better idea just to buy the magnets from a hardware store.

CLICK HERE TO VISIT THE OFFICIAL MAGNIWORK WEBSITE

How Much Power Can It Produce?

According to the author, the magnetic generator is capable of producing 3.7 volts and 7 ampere of Direct Current (DC). The amount of energy produced is equivalent to 24 watts. How does the device generate the power?

The spinning magnets is secured on an aluminum platform. The platform is connected to a central shaft that drives a DC electric generator. The same type of generator used on a bicycle. The power produced is in actual fact comes from the DC generator.

What are the downsides
Here’s the catch, the Magniwork generator is “not” a perpetual motion device. Many people had mistaken that. The magnet bars will loose its spinning momentum due to friction.

Does it have a guarantee?
Since the Magniwork e-book is offered by Clickbank, as usual, all buyers are covered by the standard 60 Days Money Back Guarantee policy. If you don’t see any valuable information in the manual, feel free to contact Clickbank and ask for a full refund. Make sure you get it done within 60 days from the purchase date.

So, what’s the Conclusion
The manual is pretty interesting to read. There’s a lot a new and unique information that I gathered from Magniwork. It seems to be the most complete alternative energy system available today. It is estimated that this exact technology will be used by every major energy company before the year 2020. But with the detailed Magniwork plans, it’s simple and inexpensive for you to use the system now! And what’s even better is that for a limited time, the inventor’s of the Magniwork system are offering a promotional 75% Discount Price!

Here’s a cool new way to save energy. It’s called Wind up sockets and here’s what to do.

For all those who are tired of systems that keep alerting them about the energy being consumed in their house and the appliances that are still plugged in, industrial designers Dongwon Joo and Jieun Choi have come up with a concept that will make energy conversation a bit easy. Dubbed the Wind Up Socket, the concept product automatically switches off appliances connected to it after a specified interval, preventing any waste.

he socket features a wind-up mechanism that can be set at an interval when the appliance is being plugged in. Once the wind-up mechanism finishes its rotation, the appliance is automatically switched off. The device seems great for all those moms and teens who don’t usually comprehend “half hour of TV time.” All the user has to do is to be sure of the appliance they’re plugging in for a specified time.

We can never get enought of greening ideas to save energy and in the process save money. Right? Well here are ten tips from a blogger at suite 101, which is quite good. You can find them here.

Re-purpose
From bottles to fabric, everything has a secondary use. Before throwing those egg cartons and cereal boxes out, think about how you can use them around the house. Cereal boxes can be transformed into magazine holders. Egg cartons make great ink wells for paint. Think outside the box and look online for ideas on how to re-purpose everyday household objects.

Consume Less
Evaluate what your household needs and focus on buying fewer things to do the same job. Bring your own reusable bags to the store, and return them to your car or bike basket once you’ve put away your items.

Get Crafty
Make your own cleaning solutions and body products. This can be a fun activity to do alone or with children. There are thousands of different recipes for soaps, candles, and cleaning products available on the web.

Go Back To The Basics
Be earthy. Decorate for holidays and special occasions all year round with natural sticks, leaves, stones and flowers that you find in the park or the neighborhood.

Mug It
Bring your own mug to the local coffee shop, work, or school.

Have some splendor in the grass
Enjoy nature. Exercise by taking a walk or run in your local park or trail. Have a picnic and enjoy natural light, just don’t forget to wear sunscreen.

Read
Not only is this a way to get the old brain going, but it is also an opportunity to save electricity by no watching television. Visit used bookstores and find literary gems; it is good food for the mind.

Stay Classy
Instead of commuting, take school classes online. This enables you to make your own schedule and save gas and paper via digital learning.

Start A Fashion war

Fashion doesn’t have to be expensive. Declare war on high prices and buy clothing at thrift and vintage stores instead. Have a clothing exchange with friends and shop for free.

Seize the day
Open windows and use the sun to light your home instead of light bulbs. Try to complete tasks around the home without turning on the lights to save energy.

If you were thinking of converting over to a wood-burning stove, installing a couple of solar panels on your roof, or replacing your existing windows and doors, now is the time to do it! The incentives built into the Federal Stimulus bill will expire at the end of the year.

Here’s a quick rundown of the tax incentives offered and how you can take advantage of them.

What do the tax credits cover?

According to the Energy Star Web site, the tax credits cover a percentage of the cost of energy-efficient appliances and home improvements, including:
* 30 percent of cost up to $1500 on:
* Biomass Stoves
* HVAC:
* Advanced Main Air Circulating Fans
* Air Source Heat Pumps
* Central Air Conditioning, Gas
* Propane or Oil Hot Water Boilers
* Natural Gas
* Oil or Propane Furnaces
* Insulation
* Roofs (Metal and Asphalt)
* Hot Water Heaters
* Windows and Doors:
* Energy-efficient Windows, Doors and Skylights
* Storm Windows and Doors
* 30 percent of cost with no upper limit on:
* Geothermal Heat Pumps
* Small Wind Turbines (Residential)
* Solar Energy Systems:
* Solar Water Heaters
* Solar Panels
* Fuel Cells

When do the tax credits expire?
For Biomass Stoves, HVAC, insulation, roofs (metal and asphalt), hot water heaters, widows and doors, the incentives expire on December 31, 2010. For geothermal heat pumps, small wind turbine, solar energy systems and fuel cells, the credits expire on December 31, 2016.

Who is eligible for the tax credits?
This depends on the improvement. If you’re considering an upgrade to your existing homes and primary residence, you are eligible to deduct the following improvements. However, new construction and rentals are not covered for these items.

Biomass Stoves
HVAC
Insulation
Roofs (Metal and Asphalt)
Hot Water Heaters
Windows and Doors

More leeway is offered, on the other hand for those installing geothermal heat pumps, small wind turbines and solar energy systems. For these investments, both existing homes and new construction qualify as well as both principal residences and second homes. Rentals do not qualify.

For those looking at investing in fuel cells, both existing homes and new construction qualify, but they must be your principal residence. Rentals and second homes do not qualify.

How can I apply for the credits?
The government’s Energy Star Web site is a great place to learn more about your options or to apply for the credits.

Where can I learn more?

7 Eco-friendly diets: Live green, lose weight, save money
Posted by Siel in bicycle, environment, food (Monday March 1, 2010 at 1:21 pm)

Made a resolution to drop a few pounds in 2010? If you followed a popular, highly-marketed diet — say, one that basically encourages you to buy sugary milk that could be contaminated with diarrhea-causing bacteria — you’ve probably given up by now.

But the year isn’t over — and you still have a good chance of keeping your 2010 resolution, the healthy way. Try one of these eco-friendly lifestyle diets to reach your weight loss goals — and to fulfill a second resolution to live greener:

4387106669 1656b4ed07 m 7 Eco friendly diets: Live green, lose weight, save moneyFor cyclists: The Car-free diet. Paula, a.k.a. Righteous Velo-Metal Broad ditched her SUV — and saw the pounds drop off. She shared her experience in an Car Free Mondays interview:

When I got my SUV, I started going to the gym, and in that ENTIRE YEAR of driving, I only lost 20 pounds and it was VERY hard (and expensive). I figured getting out there and walking and bicycling is just a more healthier option. Well, right after kicking my ex out and deciding to get a divorce (it took nearly two years to get a divorce), I lost 60 pounds. That was just from taking the bus, walking and riding an old target bike just a couple of miles a day.

Now to be fair, Paula biked a lot — 15 miles each way to get to and from work. But she also didn’t pay or make time for a gym membership! Paula’s since moved from the L.A. area to Santa Barbara, Calif., and has a shorter commute — a hilly 4.5 miles each way — which she still covers on a bike!

For sleepyheads: The Sleep Diet. Save energy by turning out the lights early — and lose weight effortlessly! Beth Terry, a.k.a. Fake Plastic Fish, recommended this Glamour article, but unfortunately Beth hasn’t had success with this diet — yet: “I’ve never been able to get enough sleep to test it out.” I can’t try it out either — because I’ve pretty much always gotten 8 hours of sleep.

For frugal detox seekers: The Unprocessed diet. When Jessica Kohler, who blogs at I’d Roll Need, left a comment here saying she lost 10 lbs “instantly” after nixing processed foods like Hot Pockets from her diet, I had to find out more. Jessica says she went from 120 to 155 lbs in about a year and a half when she transitioned from “student to sedentary cube monkey.” So she and her new boyfriend (now husband) decided to tackle their unhealthy lifestyles together:

We couldn’t afford gym memberships at the time, so we started with diet. We stopped buying the “helper meals,” totinos, and pizza rolls. We bought lots of fresh greens, lean meat (mostly chicken and fish) and cooked at home. We brought whole wheat sandwiches and yogurt to work for lunch and stopped eating out. The culmination of that coupled with a more active lifestyle (at the time, taking walks) saw an easy 10 lb. weight loss in close to 3 weeks. That may not be “instant” enough for a lot of people, but I quickly learned that weight loss and good health is a lifelong endeavor, and I’ve learned that it only works long-term when coupled with activity.

Why does cutting out processed foods help you lose weight? Jessica explains — in a post with a photo-illustrated recipe for making your own healthy pizza at home — that “when you eat boxed meals, you can eat and eat and eat, and you never really feel that full, or oppositely, …you feel sick. That hasn’t happened since taking a more natural approach to our meals.”

Cutting out processed, packaged foods was not the end all for Jessica. “There is no magic fix and the weight on the scale can definitely NOT be the only measure of success or you won’t succeed long term.” Still, cutting out processed foods “was the first step (of many) that changed everything about how I live now,” Jessica says. “I read every label. I cook every meal. I work out. I set goals.” Jessica’s since joined a gym and is back to around 120 lbs, down to a size 2, and training for a 10K!

For the traveler: The Poverty Diet: Vanessa Barrington at EcoSalon says she lost 7 lbs during her vacation — by living with a family in Guatemala, where she was studying Spanish. The family had enough food — just not an overabundance like we tend to have in the U.S. Writes Vanessa:

I can’t help but reflect on the almost unfathomable privilege inherent in not only being able to choose what and how much to eat at any time of the day, but also in our efforts to not eat, when a large part of the world struggles to get enough to eat. Guatemala being only one such place.

For dessert lovers: The Baking Diet. Ari at Baking and Books has a post every girl with a sweet tooth who wants to drop a few pounds should read: How I Ate My Cake, and Lost Weight Too. In it, Ari shares how she lost more than 20 lbs since starting her baking blog — by budgeting her sweets, among other efforts:

    I allow myself sweets twice a week. What this means is that although I post a lot of baked goods on this blog, I only bake once a week. And if I bake a batch of 30 cookies, I’ll save 4 of them as my “sweets allotment” (2 per serving) and I give the rest away. Same for cake – 1 slice is mine and the rest is shared with others. Giving away freshly baked goodies is not only good for your waistline, but it’s a great away to make friends.

Read her whole post, and you’ll see that Ari’s cooking and baking also steers her away from cheap processed convenience and fast foods — similar to Jessica’s strategy. In a post with a recipe for baking granola bars, Ari shares why it’s better to bake goods at home:

    Compared to commercially made energy bars the homespun variety excels in taste and wholesome value, forgoing all that yucky high fructose corn syrup, sodium and palm kernel oil that plagues many of the “convenience foods” you’ll find at the supermarket. If you ask me, there’s nothing convenient about consuming saturated fats, especially when you’re in a rush and your body needs the best fuel you can find.

For the would-be locavore: The 100-mile diet. Reduce food travel miles by getting all your food locally! The originators of this locavoring diet quickly dropped 15 lbs in 6 weeks — though their methods were a bit drastic.

For the vegan-curious: Simple Till Six Diet. Eco-foodie Mark Bittman basically ate unprocessed vegan food until 6 pm every day, after which he ate and drank whatever he wanted. He lost a bunch of weight, got a lot healthier, and shared his cost-effective eating plan.
__

Notice how these eco-friendly diets are all pretty frugal diets too. Why buy a gym membership when you can get your exercise on a bike? Why spend $5 – $10 a day on a fast food lunch when you can make healthier, organic fare at home at a fraction of the price? Why shell out for Lean Cuisines that pack a lot more calories than their packaging reveals, when munching through your CSA produce box is cheaper and healthier?

If you’ve dropped weight — or gotten healthier — by eating green, share your experience and tips in the comments!

As energy bills rise begin to eat into your monthly budget, solar power is being adopted by more and more people who don’t want to take on an additional burden.

It’s great to go green and be an environmentalist, but be truthful, it’s when the money starts to bite that you really think about going green. You start looking for alternative ways to generate power (I am assuming that you live in a home and not a flat). You go looking at solar panels in your local shops and try to get a quote.

That’s when you find a shocking bit of info. A decent solar plant is going to cost you around $28000. OMG, you say and fold up your solar plans. But wait a minute, I say. People are just trying to rip you off! You can get your own solar plant for just $200. And you can put it all together youself over a weekend.

Interested?

Before we get to the juicy part about how to do that let me show you a few basic stuff. If you don’t want to learn the techie part, just click here and get to the real stuff.

The Complete Guide to Having Your Solar Plant at Home

If you are like me and curious about stuff, let’s take a look at solar panels. Solar energy as you know contains a number of molecules including electrons and protons. We are concerned with electrons, because that’s the key to the electric power that is being generated.
A solar plant is all about capturing electrons and isolating them using solar plates along with a photovoltaic cell.

The first stage of the process is absorbing the molecules through the solar plates. The solar plates have the ability to assemble concentrated electrons and channel them to the semiconductor plates.

Once the electrons have been gathered, we need to transport them to the battery. The electrons go through a series of filters known as the converter and semiconductor wires and plates, during this stage.
This is simple to assure that the electricity produced is composed of pure electrons.

Having protons mixed in the procedure would only cause power interruption. The protons are absorbed and disposed through an alternate exhaust, which excretes the molecules away from the battery connection.

Finally, we come to the last stage of the process. Which is to utilize electricity that is stored in the batteries. Usually, a set of 10 batteries are used to allow a large amount of electricity to be stored. At this point, what are left are pure electrons, which are considered the source for electrical power that is used by electrical gadgets and appliances.

Now, if all this sounds geeky, let me show you a manual that will clarify all these and give you step by step instructions to put together your own first solar plant.

Every one wants to know how to conserve energy. For some its a fashion. For others it is a calling. And for still others its a duty to their children, their surroundings and their belief. Whatever the reason we’ve all taken up the green cause and let’s try our best to keep on with it.

With the rising energy costs and effects of global warming so prevalent today, many people are wondering if there is truth to the concept of renewable energy technology. There also appears to be confusion between alternative energy technology and renewable energy technology. Alternative energy encompasses all renewable energy sources, but includes things like nuclear power and energy from municipal waste. These are carbonaceous examples. Renewable energy technology focuses on energy that is replaced as it is being used, such as solar energy and wind energy.

With that clear, are there truly benefits on a home or small business level to renewable solar technology? Absolutely. Truthfully, by utilizing renewable energy technology on a home level you can save yourself thousands of dollars each year. Renewable energy technology has gained popularity in recent years and it has become increasingly easy to meet your home’s energy needs with just a little handyman work. With the information available about renewable energy technology, it is possible to build renewable energy products, such as a windmill or solar panel, on your own. Do-it-yourselfers are saving huge amounts of pocket change by building and installing these systems themselves. If you have the money to invest in a commercial professionally installed system, in general these are more efficient, however, savings can still be realized, and at a much faster rate, by researching and building your own renewable energy systems.

Renewable energy technology is advancing with each day. Solar electrical systems have advanced from giant roof panels to thin layers of film that are twice as conductive and work with less sunlight. There are now solar powered charges for cell phones, batteries and other small household items. Windmills have been made more aerodynamic for greater action and electricity generation. Renewable energy technology can even be seen along today’s highways as small solar/wind operation stations powering signs and lights.

Many homeowners today are looking into integrating green energy sources for developing more energy efficient homes and businesses. A green energy source is power generated through renewable resources, such as the sun, wind and water. The other benefit of green energy sources is their low contribution to global warming, pollution and other environmental issues.

The most popular of green energy sources is the sun. Energy captured from the sun is called solar energy. Of the green energy sources, solar energy is the most popular because it offers multiple options for use. It is possible to harness electrical energy from the sun using solar panels consisting of photovoltaic cells that convert energy from the sun into electricity you can use in your home or business. There are also solar hot water collectors that use the heat of the sun to produce hot water. These solar green energy sources are readily available and increasing in popularity as most homes and businesses can have them mounted on their roof and they can take advantage of lowered utility costs.

The most efficient of green energy sources is wind. Wind has been used to power water pumps for centuries, but has grown in popularity as a way to supplement home and business electricity needs. Wind is the safest and cleanest of the green energy sources as it produces no pollutants and does not contribute to global warming. Wind energy is harnessed by erecting a turbine that spins in the breeze generating electricity. Unlike the sun, which can be found almost anywhere, in order to utilize wind as a green energy source, you must live in an area where wind is readily available.

Water is also a viable participant of green energy sources. Water is less widely used as a green energy source for homes, as not all homes have an available stream to produce the needed electricity. The Amish have used water to power entire shops using conveyer belt systems, so it is an old practice, but it is still being used successfully today. As with solar and wind energy, energy harnessed from moving water is almost completely pollutant free and is generated from a renewable resource.

Ian Churchill rides his bike home after school, pulling a trailer containing his saxophone and school supplies. Ian, 11, is one of several sixth-grade students at Seven Peaks School in west Bend who have taken up a challenge to ride to school as much or more than their teacher does. The prize? An end-of-semester sandwich. Plus the activity dovetails with other lessons the class is learning about sustainability.

Last Christmas morning, Ian Churchill woke up to find a new bike trailer waiting for him. At 6 a.m., Ian now throws his backpack, lunch, saxophone and his brother’s clarinet into the covered trailer attached to his K2 mountain bike and embarks on the two-mile ride to Seven Peaks School in west Bend.

“I just like pulling my own weight, literally,” said Ian, 11.

Ian and his fellow sixth-graders were put to a challenge at the beginning of the school year by Dante Biancucci, 39, the sixth-grade science and math teacher. Biancucci challenged his 48 students to ride their bikes to school as much or more than he did. The reward: a free lunch at the end of the semester.

The challenge taught the students about energy conservation and complemented other academic projects about energy. Through education about conserving energy and raising awareness, according to Biancucci, habits can change at any age.

“It’s fun,” Ben Walter, 11, said about biking to school. “It’s not burning as much fuel.”

Added Ian, “Plus you get a free sandwich.”

His mother does not have to burn fuel driving her two sons, Ian and Will Churchill, to school every morning.

It’s more sustainable for his brother and him to ride their bikes to school, Ian said.

“There’s no real reason to drive,” Ian said. “You get in a huge SUV with a small backpack with you, and you have to drive it — it doesn’t make sense.”

At the beginning of the year, when students introduced themselves and shared something about their interests, Biancucci told them that he enjoys riding his bike. He knew some eighth-grade students challenged themselves to ride their bikes to school last year, and Biancucci decided to present his sixth-grade students with a similar mission.

“I do it myself, and it’s fun. I enjoy the exercise, and I realize that it’s a more sustainable method of transportation,” Biancucci said. “I invited the kids along to see what I would get, and the kids were really excited about it.”

Last semester, Ian and Ashlynn Kitatake-Meyers, 12, won the challenge. Ashlynn rode her bike to school all but four days, and Ian all but six days. At the end of the semester, Biancucci paid for roast beef and turkey sub sandwiches for the two students from Tony’s Delicatessen.

Ashlynn participated because she likes to bike, it’s a healthy activity and it helps the environment.

“I would be using a lot of fuel even to go half a mile,” she said about riding in a car to school. “Biking wouldn’t use any fuel other than the food you eat. I see it as being green.”

The students biked through snowstorms, rough terrain and even at night as the days became shorter. Obstacles did not deter the sixth-graders, though.

“Snowstorms are kind of fun,” Biancucci said.

“Because you can’t see,” Ian added with a smile.

Flat tires, icy paths and uphill climbs were all part of the challenge. Ian crashed his first trailer in the snow earlier in the school year, Ashlynn fell on the ice at least five times, and Ben had to bike five miles to the top of Awbrey Butte, where his family lives.

Many of the students’ bikes were equipped with lights. Backpacks contained water, cold-weather gear, spare tires, patches, Band-Aids, energy boost pouches and CO2 bike tire refills.

“I think he does it more for the challenge than for the free sandwich,” said Bruce Churchill, Ian’s father.

Some mornings were hard for Ian to get up and bike to school, he said. But as the days passed and biking became routine, it was easier for him to get out of bed. This semester, he continues to rise early and pedal to school.

The students helped the teacher get out of bed, too.

“Knowing that Ian was biking every day gave me more inspiration to get up and bike,” Biancucci said.

On some days, the challenge was biking home.

“You might just have a bad day at school and you don’t want to bike home, but you choose to,” Ashlynn said.

Biking to school every day has taught the students not only about energy conservation, but other habits as well.

“I liked the independence of it,” said Alex Browning, 12.

Students problem solve and fix flat tires along the route. They are responsible for their safety and learn to be aware, Biancucci said.

The sixth-grade teacher also organizes academic projects to teach students about the environment.

Last month, students created three- to five-minute infomercials that described different types of energy sources, such as solar, biomass, wind and even coal. The infomercials, which were created using a green screen and video technology, were presented at a sixth-grade viewing last month.

The purpose of the project, according to Biancucci, was to address the question of how the world will meet its energy needs in the future. He hopes to take the students on field trips to wind farms and Bonneville Dam in the future.

Information about the environment and future energy needs is being increasingly incorporated into school curriculum and government policy, according to Biancucci.

“It’s a growing awareness,” he said. “It’s a different world. There’s more people on the planet, and we are realizing that we can’t live the way we did 100 years ago.”

Seven Peaks also is working toward earning the Oregon Green School certification, which acknowledges schools that are making green goals and have programs to recycle, reduce waste, save energy and conserve water.

Transportation was one habit some students changed, biking to school instead of riding in a car, Biancucci said, and as people become more educated about energy conservation, other habits could change, too.

“They will have the education to change their habits, things at home and be able to educate the student body here,” he said.

Halfway through the spring semester, Biancucci’s students are continuing the challenge. And they plan to pursue the biking habit into the future.

“I’ll probably go through high school” biking to school, Ian said. “I don’t want to grow up and walk around in spacesuits,” he said about burning fuel and its reported effect on global warming.

“We could save money by not buying a car and biking to school,” Ben said.

“And then we could use the money to go to college,” Alex added.

Ashlynn hopes to purchase an energy-efficient car when she gets older, and plans to bike to school depending on distance.

Ian, Ben and Alex recommend to everyone to bike at least once somewhere — whether to school, work or the gym.

“At least try to bike to school, just to try it once,” Ben said, “and if you can’t do it again, then don’t do it.”

In fact after I picked up a copy of the Magnetic Energy Generator DIY kits I began to see things in a new light.

The electric generator system is s series of easy to follow plans, that allow the user to construct their own Magnetic Electric Generator. A small magnetic generator can be constructed by anyone, even with no prior experience in as little as two hours.

You may be wondering what it costs to build a Magnetic Electricity Generator? The Electric Generator that I constructed using the plans cost just under $120 and was capable of powering nearly 50% of my home, thus cutting my electric bill in half. By building an additional unit, or building a larger unit, I will be able to virtually eliminate my electric bill!

But what special tools are required to construct a do it yourself free energy generator? None! Virtually all you need is standard household tools, such as a screwdriver. The materials for the Magnetic Generator itself can be purchased from any local hardware store, such as Home Depot.

Using a magnetic generator has distinct advantages over the use of other alternative energy sources such as solar or wind power. The main advantage is that magnetic energy is not reliant on weather, where as a cloudy day can eliminate solar energy. Another advantage is cost. Solar and Wind systems are generally very expensive to install, whereas the Magniwork system is very inexpensive!

Based on the experience I had building my magnetic energy generator, I would recommend the plans to anyone looking to reduce or eliminate their electric bill, or simply looking to help the environment! Magnetic energy is proving to be one of the leading sources of alternative green energy!
